Canada Study Permit 2026 — Complete Guide for Bangladeshi Students

📅 Updated April 2026 ⏱️ 16 min read ✍️ Teesta Tech Counsellors

Canada is the most popular destination for Bangladeshi students who want a clear pathway from study to permanent residency. After major rule changes in 2024–25 — caps on study permits, the closure of the Student Direct Stream, a higher proof-of-funds requirement and stricter PGWP eligibility — the 2026 picture is finally settling. This guide covers exactly what you need to know.

Teesta Promise

1. Why Canada in 2026?

Despite recent tightening, Canada still offers what most other countries can't: a structured, points-based PR pathway designed to retain international graduates.

⚠️ Major 2024–25 changes: IRCC introduced a national cap on new study permits and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) requirement. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed on 8 November 2024 — everyone now applies for a regular study permit. Proof of funds rose from CAD 10,000 to CAD 20,635 in January 2024 and to CAD 22,895 on 1 September 2025. PGWP now carries a language requirement, and a field-of-study requirement for non-degree programmes. Always check current rules with us before applying.

2. Entry Requirements by Level

Bachelor's (Undergraduate)

Master's (Postgraduate)

3. IELTS Requirements Table

Program LevelIELTS OverallMin Band
Diploma / Advanced Diploma6.05.5
Bachelor's (most)6.56.0
Bachelor's (top universities)6.5 – 7.06.0 – 6.5
Master's (most)6.56.0
Master's (Education, Communications)7.06.5
💡 There is no longer a separate visa English requirement. The old rule of 6.0 in each band belonged to the Student Direct Stream, which closed on 8 November 2024. Your university or college now sets the English requirement, so always check the per-band minimum on your programme page — a 7.0 overall with 5.5 in writing may still be rejected by the institution.

4. There Is Only One Route Now — The Regular Study Permit

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) ended on 8 November 2024. It has not been replaced and it is not coming back. Every application from Bangladesh is now processed as a regular study permit. There is no fast-track stream and no separate SDS checklist.

This removed several conditions that used to be compulsory. IELTS 6.0 in every band, a GIC, paying your full first-year tuition upfront and completing a medical before applying were all SDS requirements — none of them is a visa requirement any more. Your institution still sets its own English and payment requirements.

RequirementRegular study permit (current rule)
Letter of acceptanceRequired, from a DLI
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)Required for most applicants
Proof of fundsCAD 22,895 for living costs, in addition to first-year tuition and travel
GICAccepted as proof of funds, but not mandatory
First-year tuition paidNot a visa requirement — follow your institution's deposit rules
English testWhatever your institution requires
Medical examUpfront or upon request

In practice a wider range of students can now apply than under SDS, but the officer assesses your funds, your study plan and your ties to Bangladesh on their merits. A complete, well-evidenced application matters more than ever.

5. Proof of Funds (CAD 22,895)

You must show CAD 22,895 for living costs for one year as a single applicant outside Quebec — in addition to your first-year tuition and your travel costs. This threshold took effect on 1 September 2025 (it was CAD 20,635 from January 2024 to August 2025, and CAD 10,000 before that).

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is still accepted as proof of funds, but it is no longer mandatory — that was an SDS rule. Many students still choose one because it is a clean, easily verified way to evidence the CAD 22,895, and the bank releases the money back to you in instalments after you arrive. If you prefer to evidence your funds another way, check the accepted document list on the IRCC website before you submit.

If you decide to use a GIC:

  1. Open a GIC account remotely with a participating bank — Scotiabank, ICICI Bank Canada, RBC, CIBC, BMO or SBI Canada.
  2. Transfer the amount you intend to show as living funds (banks charge their own processing fee; no bank mandates the CAD 22,895 figure).
  3. The bank issues a GIC Certificate you can submit with your study permit application.
  4. After arriving, activate the account and receive your initial release plus the monthly payouts set by your bank.
📌 The threshold has already been raised twice since the start of 2024 — always check the current figure on the IRCC website before you transfer money.

6. Study Permit Application Steps

Step 1 — Get a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI

Apply, accept your offer and pay your deposit. The school issues an official Letter of Acceptance.

Step 2 — Get a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)

Most applicants need a PAL (or a TAL in Quebec) from the province. Master's and doctoral programmes at public DLIs starting on or after 1 January 2026 are exempt.

Step 3 — Arrange your proof of funds

Assemble evidence of CAD 22,895 in living funds plus first-year tuition and travel costs. A GIC is one accepted way to show this, but it is optional — see section 5.

Step 4 — Take your English test and medical exam

An upfront medical is no longer compulsory as it was under SDS — IRCC may instead request one after you apply. Many students still complete it early to avoid a delay. Medicals are done at an IRCC-approved panel physician in Bangladesh, typically in Dhaka.

Step 5 — Apply online via IRCC portal

Submit: Letter of Acceptance + PAL/TAL, proof of funds, any tuition receipt, your English test result, medical confirmation, passport, statement of purpose, transcripts.

Step 6 — Biometrics in Dhaka

Fingerprints and photo at VFS Global VAC in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Step 7 — Decision

Processing times change constantly, so we don't quote a figure — check the official IRCC processing times tool for the current estimate for study permits from Bangladesh, and apply as early as you can. The actual study permit is issued at the Canadian airport on arrival.

12. Common Canada Refusal Reasons

  1. Weak Statement of Purpose. Vague or generic SOPs are the leading cause of refusal from Bangladesh.
  2. Insufficient ties to Bangladesh. The officer needs to believe you have reasons to return home.
  3. Funds appearing suddenly. Same scrutiny as UK and Australia — sudden large deposits look like borrowed money.
  4. Program doesn't match background. Computer science graduate applying for hotel management diploma raises flags.
  5. Low-cost private college without a credible career link — heavily scrutinised since 2024 restrictions.
  6. PAL/TAL missing. Submitting without a valid Provincial Attestation Letter when required is an automatic refusal.
  7. Funds below the threshold. Showing less than CAD 22,895 in living funds on top of first-year tuition and travel.
  8. English score below what your institution asked for, which can cost you the offer letter your application depends on.
  9. Family in Canada must be disclosed and explained.

13. Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do I need for a Canadian study permit in 2026?
CAD 22,895 in living funds for a single applicant outside Quebec, in addition to your first-year tuition and your travel costs. This has applied since 1 September 2025. If family members are coming with you, the required amount is higher — check the current figures on the IRCC website.
Can I bring my spouse and children to Canada?
Spouse open work permits were tightened in 2024–25. Currently only available if you're studying a Master's of 16+ months, a doctoral program, or select professional programs. For Bachelor's and college, spouses generally cannot get an open work permit.
Is SDS still available for Bangladeshi students in 2026?
No. The Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024 at 2 p.m. ET and has not been replaced. All applications — including those from Bangladesh — are now processed as regular study permits. There is no fast-track stream, and it is not expected to return.
Do I still need a GIC?
No. The GIC became optional when SDS closed. It is still accepted as proof of funds and many students use one because it is a clean way to evidence the CAD 22,895, but you can use other acceptable evidence instead. No bank requires you to deposit that exact figure.
Does my GIC money belong to me?
Yes — if you choose to use a GIC, the money in it is yours. The bank releases it back to you: an initial lump sum when you activate the account, then monthly payouts over the year. Amounts and fees vary by bank.
What is a DLI and how do I check?
A Designated Learning Institution is a school approved by a provincial government to host international students. The full list is on the IRCC website. Each DLI has a unique number starting with "O".
Will I get PR after my Master's in Canada?
PR is not automatic. You must work for at least one year in a skilled occupation on your PGWP, then apply via Express Entry CEC or a Provincial Nominee Program. Most achieve PR within 3–4 years of arrival.
How long does a Canadian study permit take?
We don't quote a number, because IRCC's estimates change constantly and the old SDS-era figures no longer apply to anything. Check the official IRCC processing times tool for the current estimate for study permits from Bangladesh, and submit as early as you can before your intake.
Can I switch colleges or universities?
Yes, but with restrictions since 2024. You must update your study permit and may need a new Letter of Acceptance and PAL. Switching from a degree to a non-PGWP-eligible diploma may also lose your post-graduation work rights.
Is a 3-year Bangladeshi Bachelor's enough for a Canadian Master's?
Some universities accept it, particularly for specific Master's programs. Many require a 4-year Bachelor's. We can tell you which specific institutions accept your degree.
Has Canada become harder for Bangladeshi students?
Yes — 2024 and 2025 saw the biggest tightening in over a decade. But for genuine, well-prepared applicants studying at a real university or approved college program, Canada remains very achievable. Applications just need to be cleaner than before.
