Canada is the most popular destination for Bangladeshi students who want a clear pathway from study to permanent residency. After major rule changes in 2024–25 — caps on study permits, the closure of the Student Direct Stream, a higher proof-of-funds requirement and stricter PGWP eligibility — the 2026 picture is finally settling. This guide covers exactly what you need to know.
1. Why Canada in 2026?
Despite recent tightening, Canada still offers what most other countries can't: a structured, points-based PR pathway designed to retain international graduates.
- Clear PR pathway. Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is built specifically for international graduates with Canadian work experience.
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Up to 3 years of open work rights after graduation — the longest of any major destination.
- Affordable tuition compared to UK, USA and Australia, especially in smaller cities and provinces like Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces.
- Universal-style healthcare in most provinces after a short qualifying period.
- Bilingual environment opens additional French-language pathways for higher CRS scores.
- Strong Bangladeshi communities in Toronto, Mississauga, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.
2. Entry Requirements by Level
College Diploma / Advanced Diploma
- HSC: Most public colleges accept HSC with GPA 3.0+ for Diploma and Advanced Diploma programs (1–3 years).
- Lower English requirement than universities (typically IELTS 6.0).
Bachelor's (Undergraduate)
- HSC: Direct entry typically requires GPA 4.0–5.0. Top universities (UofT, UBC, McGill, Waterloo) prefer A-Levels or strong IB results.
- A-Level: Direct entry, typically AAB to BBB depending on program.
Master's (Postgraduate)
- 4-year Bachelor's: Standard requirement, with CGPA equivalent to Canadian B (around 3.0/4.0 or 70–75%).
- 3-year Bachelor's: Sometimes accepted, but many universities prefer 4-year degrees.
3. IELTS Requirements Table
| Program Level | IELTS Overall | Min Band |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma / Advanced Diploma | 6.0 | 5.5 |
| Bachelor's (most) | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| Bachelor's (top universities) | 6.5 – 7.0 | 6.0 – 6.5 |
| Master's (most) | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| Master's (Education, Communications) | 7.0 | 6.5 |
4. There Is Only One Route Now — The Regular Study Permit
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) ended on 8 November 2024. It has not been replaced and it is not coming back. Every application from Bangladesh is now processed as a regular study permit. There is no fast-track stream and no separate SDS checklist.
This removed several conditions that used to be compulsory. IELTS 6.0 in every band, a GIC, paying your full first-year tuition upfront and completing a medical before applying were all SDS requirements — none of them is a visa requirement any more. Your institution still sets its own English and payment requirements.
| Requirement | Regular study permit (current rule) |
|---|---|
| Letter of acceptance | Required, from a DLI |
| Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) | Required for most applicants |
| Proof of funds | CAD 22,895 for living costs, in addition to first-year tuition and travel |
| GIC | Accepted as proof of funds, but not mandatory |
| First-year tuition paid | Not a visa requirement — follow your institution's deposit rules |
| English test | Whatever your institution requires |
| Medical exam | Upfront or upon request |
In practice a wider range of students can now apply than under SDS, but the officer assesses your funds, your study plan and your ties to Bangladesh on their merits. A complete, well-evidenced application matters more than ever.
5. Proof of Funds (CAD 22,895)
You must show CAD 22,895 for living costs for one year as a single applicant outside Quebec — in addition to your first-year tuition and your travel costs. This threshold took effect on 1 September 2025 (it was CAD 20,635 from January 2024 to August 2025, and CAD 10,000 before that).
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is still accepted as proof of funds, but it is no longer mandatory — that was an SDS rule. Many students still choose one because it is a clean, easily verified way to evidence the CAD 22,895, and the bank releases the money back to you in instalments after you arrive. If you prefer to evidence your funds another way, check the accepted document list on the IRCC website before you submit.
If you decide to use a GIC:
- Open a GIC account remotely with a participating bank — Scotiabank, ICICI Bank Canada, RBC, CIBC, BMO or SBI Canada.
- Transfer the amount you intend to show as living funds (banks charge their own processing fee; no bank mandates the CAD 22,895 figure).
- The bank issues a GIC Certificate you can submit with your study permit application.
- After arriving, activate the account and receive your initial release plus the monthly payouts set by your bank.
6. Study Permit Application Steps
Step 1 — Get a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
Apply, accept your offer and pay your deposit. The school issues an official Letter of Acceptance.
Step 2 — Get a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)
Most applicants need a PAL (or a TAL in Quebec) from the province. Master's and doctoral programmes at public DLIs starting on or after 1 January 2026 are exempt.
Step 3 — Arrange your proof of funds
Assemble evidence of CAD 22,895 in living funds plus first-year tuition and travel costs. A GIC is one accepted way to show this, but it is optional — see section 5.
Step 4 — Take your English test and medical exam
An upfront medical is no longer compulsory as it was under SDS — IRCC may instead request one after you apply. Many students still complete it early to avoid a delay. Medicals are done at an IRCC-approved panel physician in Bangladesh, typically in Dhaka.
Step 5 — Apply online via IRCC portal
Submit: Letter of Acceptance + PAL/TAL, proof of funds, any tuition receipt, your English test result, medical confirmation, passport, statement of purpose, transcripts.
Step 6 — Biometrics in Dhaka
Fingerprints and photo at VFS Global VAC in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Step 7 — Decision
Processing times change constantly, so we don't quote a figure — check the official IRCC processing times tool for the current estimate for study permits from Bangladesh, and apply as early as you can. The actual study permit is issued at the Canadian airport on arrival.

10. Express Entry PR Pathway
With Canadian work experience on a PGWP, you become eligible for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry.
Basic CEC requirements
- At least 1 year of full-time skilled work experience in Canada (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3) within the past 3 years
- Language ability: CLB 7 for TEER 0/1, CLB 5 for TEER 2/3 (CLB 7 ≈ IELTS 6.0 in each band)
- Plan to live outside Quebec
Other PR options:
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) — each province has its own streams
- Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) — easier route via Atlantic provinces
- Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) — for Quebec graduates (French required)
11. Scholarships Available
- Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships — CAD 50,000/year for 3 years for doctoral students.
- Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) — for Master's and doctoral students at Ontario universities.
- University-specific entrance scholarships — CAD 1,000–10,000 based on academic merit; some go up to full tuition.
- Provincial scholarships — Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan offer attractive packages with lower tuition.
- Departmental funding for Master's by research and PhD — typically CAD 15,000–25,000 stipend/year.
12. Common Canada Refusal Reasons
- Weak Statement of Purpose. Vague or generic SOPs are the leading cause of refusal from Bangladesh.
- Insufficient ties to Bangladesh. The officer needs to believe you have reasons to return home.
- Funds appearing suddenly. Same scrutiny as UK and Australia — sudden large deposits look like borrowed money.
- Program doesn't match background. Computer science graduate applying for hotel management diploma raises flags.
- Low-cost private college without a credible career link — heavily scrutinised since 2024 restrictions.
- PAL/TAL missing. Submitting without a valid Provincial Attestation Letter when required is an automatic refusal.
- Funds below the threshold. Showing less than CAD 22,895 in living funds on top of first-year tuition and travel.
- English score below what your institution asked for, which can cost you the offer letter your application depends on.
- Family in Canada must be disclosed and explained.
