NZ Visa Refusal — Top 5

📅 April 2026⏱️ 5 min read✍️ Teesta Tech Counsellors

NZ has a 90%+ visa approval rate for genuine Bangladeshi applicants to the University of Auckland, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, Massey University, Lincoln University, and AUT. But the remaining 10% get refused for predictable reasons. Here are the top 5 — and how to avoid every one.

1. Insufficient Financial Proof (Most Common)

INZ requires NZD $20,000/year for living + tuition paid + NZD $2,500 return airfare. The mistakes BD students make:

Fix: Start building your bank balance 6+ months before applying. Include sponsor income proof. Ensure total covers tuition (paid to the University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, or whichever institution you're attending) + NZD $22,500 living + airfare.

2. Wrong or Unapproved Institution

All 8 NZ universities are approved. But some private training establishments (PTEs) are NOT on the NZQA approved list or INZ's list of approved institutions for student visas.

How this happens: A student applies to a cheap PTE offering a "diploma" that isn't NZQA-approved. The visa gets refused because INZ doesn't recognise the programme.

Fix: Stick to the 8 universities (University of Auckland, Otago, Victoria Wellington, Canterbury, Waikato, Massey, Lincoln, AUT) or verify any polytechnic/PTE on the NZQA and INZ approved lists before paying tuition.

3. Programme Doesn't Match Background

If you have a Bachelor's in English Literature and apply for a Master's in Cybersecurity at AUT, INZ may question your genuine student intent. The programme should logically follow from your academic or professional background.

Fix: Choose programmes that connect to your existing qualifications. If you're switching fields, explain the connection in your cover letter — and ideally have relevant work experience to justify the change.

4. Previous Visa Refusals Not Declared

If Canada, UK, or Australia refused your visa and you DON'T declare it on your NZ application — this is grounds for automatic refusal. INZ shares data with other immigration authorities and WILL find out.

Fix: Always declare previous refusals honestly. Explain the circumstances and what's changed. Many BD students refused by Canada are approved for NZ — the refusal itself isn't disqualifying, but hiding it is.

5. Medical Not Completed Before Application

Unlike UK or Canada (where medical can be done after applying), NZ requires your eMedical to be submitted BEFORE or simultaneously with your visa application. If medical results aren't in INZ's system, your application sits unprocessed.

Fix: Get your medical done at an INZ-approved panel physician in Dhaka BEFORE you submit your visa application. This is the most common "administrative" reason for delays and perceived refusals.

6. How to Get Into the 90%

7. FAQ

Does a Canada refusal mean NZ will refuse too?

No. INZ evaluates your application independently. Many BD students refused by Canada get NZ visas successfully — especially when applying to reputable universities like the University of Waikato, Massey University, or Lincoln University with complete documentation.

Can I reapply after NZ refusal?

Yes. No limit on re-applications. Address the specific reason for refusal (stated in your decline letter) before reapplying. Most students who fix the identified issue are approved on the second attempt.

Is approval rate really 90%+?

For genuine applicants to the 8 NZ universities with complete documentation: yes. The refusal rate is concentrated among applications to unapproved PTEs or applications with clearly deficient finances.

8. What to Do If Refused

If your NZ student visa is refused, don't panic. The refusal letter from INZ will state the specific reason. Here's how to fix each:

Refused for finances: Build your bank balance for 3-6 more months. Add a sponsor income documentation that was missing. Consider getting an education loan sanction letter as backup proof. Re-apply when your financial picture is genuinely stronger.

Refused for wrong institution: Switch to one of the 8 NZ universities (University of Auckland, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, Massey University, Lincoln University, or AUT). These are guaranteed NZQA-approved and INZ-trusted.

Refused for undeclared previous refusal: This is the hardest to overcome because it involves a trust breach. In your re-application, declare everything honestly and include a cover letter explaining why it was omitted previously (honest mistake, didn't understand the question). INZ may accept this if the rest of your application is strong.

Refused for medical not received: This isn't really a "refusal" — it's an administrative issue. Complete your eMedical immediately and re-submit. No prejudice against you.

Re-application timeline: Wait at least 4-6 weeks after refusal before re-applying. Use this time to address the specific issue identified. There's no limit on how many times you can re-apply. Many BD students are approved on their second attempt after fixing the identified gap.

Teesta Tech reviews visa refusal letters and advises on the strongest re-application strategy — free. We've helped dozens of previously-refused BD students get approved on their next attempt.

Reason 1: Insufficient or Suspicious Financial Documents

This is the #1 cause of NZ visa refusal for Bangladeshi students. INZ requires NZD $20,000/year in living costs plus tuition already paid. Common financial mistakes:

Reason 2: Non-Approved or Wrong Institution

All 8 NZ universities (University of Auckland, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, Massey University, Lincoln University, and AUT) are fully NZQA-approved. The risk is with smaller Private Training Establishments (PTEs) — some have lost approval or have conditions. Always verify your institution's status on the NZQA Provider Register before applying.

Reason 3: Incomplete Medical Examination

This is uniquely a NZ problem. Unlike Canada or UK where you can submit the visa first and do medical later, NZ requires your eMedical results to be in INZ's system BEFORE your application will be processed. Many BD students don't know this and submit without completing the medical — causing weeks of delay or outright refusal if the medical window expires.

Solution: Book your medical appointment at an INZ-approved clinic in Dhaka at least 2 weeks before you plan to submit your visa application. Results typically upload to the eMedical system within 3-5 days.

Reason 4: Undisclosed Previous Visa Refusals

The NZ visa application form asks: "Have you ever been declined a visa for any country?" This is a yes/no question. If you answer "no" but INZ discovers you were refused by Canada, UK, or Australia (they check), your application is refused for non-disclosure — which is more serious than the original refusal.

The truth: Having a previous Canada or UK refusal does NOT automatically disqualify you from NZ. Many BD students refused by Canada get NZ visas successfully. But you MUST declare the refusal and briefly explain the circumstances. Honesty is always the safer strategy.

Reason 5: Programme Doesn't Match Academic Background

If you have a Bachelor's in English Literature and apply for a Master of Cybersecurity at AUT, INZ may question the academic progression. The programme should logically follow from your previous education. If you're switching fields, include a cover letter explaining your motivation and any bridging courses or relevant work experience.
