Many Canadian universities require IELTS 6.5 overall — but not all. Several DLI-accredited institutions accept IELTS 6.0, making Canada accessible for Bangladeshi students who haven't yet crossed the 6.5 barrier. Here's where you can study with 6.0.
1. Is 6.0 Enough for Canada?
Yes — with important caveats:
- For your study permit: IRCC no longer sets a band-by-band English score for students. The old "6.0 in every band" rule belonged to the Student Direct Stream, which closed on 8 November 2024. Every application is now a regular study permit
- For admission: Your university or college sets the requirement, not IRCC. Some accept 6.0 overall
- For PGWP: No separate English requirement — your programme completion qualifies you
2. Universities Accepting 6.0 IELTS
- University of Regina — IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.0) for some graduate programmes. Saskatchewan PNP is immigrant-friendly. Tuition: CAD $20,000-24,000/year.
- Lakehead University — IELTS 6.0 overall for select programmes. Located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Low living costs, strong PNP options.
- Cape Breton University — IELTS 6.0-6.5 depending on programme. Popular with BD students. Nova Scotia PNP actively recruits graduates.
- University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) — IELTS 6.0 overall for some programmes. PEI has one of Canada's fastest PNP processes.
3. Colleges Accepting 6.0 IELTS (PGWP-Eligible)
Canadian public colleges offer diploma and post-graduate certificate programmes that are PGWP-eligible:
- Conestoga College — Ontario. IELTS 6.0 overall. Strong co-op programmes. Post-grad certificates in IT, business, engineering technology.
- Niagara College — Ontario. IELTS 6.0 for many programmes. Hospitality, business, environmental programmes.
- Cambrian College — Sudbury, Ontario. IELTS 6.0. Northern Ontario — lower cost, strong PNP.
- New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) — IELTS 6.0. New Brunswick has one of the most generous PNPs.
- Red River College Polytechnic — Winnipeg, Manitoba. IELTS 6.0-6.5. Manitoba PNP is very accessible.
4. IELTS 6.0 and Your Study Permit
You may still read that you need IELTS 6.0 in each band (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) for your visa. That was a Student Direct Stream rule, and SDS ended on 8 November 2024. There is no fast-track stream any more — every application from Bangladesh is processed as a regular study permit.
So if your overall is 6.0 but one band is 5.5, that no longer disqualifies you from any visa route. What it can still affect is admission: each university and college publishes its own minimum, and some do require a minimum in every band. Check the requirement on the programme page before you apply.
On timelines: ignore the old "20-30 day" figures — those were SDS-era. For a current estimate, use IRCC's official processing times tool.
5. Application Tips
- Apply to multiple institutions: With 6.0 IELTS, your options are narrower — apply to 4-6 institutions to maximize acceptance chances
- Consider Duolingo: Some Canadian institutions accept Duolingo English Test as an alternative. A Duolingo score of 105+ is roughly equivalent to IELTS 6.0-6.5
- Conditional admission: Some universities offer conditional admission with IELTS 5.5 + a pre-sessional English course. This adds time and cost but gets you in
- Retake IELTS: If you're at 5.5 overall, investing 2-3 months in preparation to reach 6.0-6.5 opens dramatically more options
6. FAQ
Is a college diploma less valuable than a university degree?
For PR purposes, no — a 2-year college diploma gives you the same 3-year PGWP as a 2-year university degree. College programmes are often more practical and employment-focused, which can be an advantage.
Can I transfer from college to university later?
Yes. Many colleges have transfer agreements with universities. You can complete a 2-year diploma, get PGWP, start working, and then pursue a university degree part-time if desired.
